WITH HEARTFELT SYMPATHY, Sierra’s Haven mourns the death of long-time friend, dedicated volunteer, and former board member, Larry Lonney, PhD. Retired from the faculty at Shawnee State University, Larry devoted a large part of his life to Sierra’s. He was faithful to help socialize frightened and shy dogs to get ready for adoption. After extensive training in canine assessment, he was instrumental in the Rescue Waggin' and other transfer programs that transported dogs to other shelters for adoption. Larry will be greatly missed at the shelter for his kind spirit and generosity during assessment days, transport days, cat neuter days and adoption events.
Lawrence W. Lonney Jr., 74, of Portsmouth, died Wednesday October 17, 2018 at SOMC. He was preceded in death by his parents, Larry and Madeline Lonny, his sister Betsey, and his brother-in-law, William Carley. He is survived by his wife of fifty years, Susan, his nephews, Richard (Kathleen), David (Linda), Jeffrey, and niece Kristi (Danny), and by his dogs, Andy and Max.
Larry was a retired Physics Professor at Shawnee State University, He spent his retirement volunteering for Sierra's Haven. His love of animals knew no bounds. For years he rode his bicycle to school, no matter what the weather. He exercised at the Life Center, and was a "mad-man" on the stair master. A Memorial Service will be planned at a later date. Any donation to Sierra's Haven in Larry's name is appreciated.
